Why World of Warcraft Needs to Move On

Warcraft is coming up on it’s 30th anniversary, and with any franchise that old, there starts to be some growing pains in the story. If we want the franchise to keep going for another 30, we need to accept that it’s about time to start passing the torch.

  1. Is it only me or are the stories about super mega gods and cosmic powers may tooo overused and boring? What about stories more based on other conflicts not involving end of the universe scale events?

  2. 4:05 look at that scene right there.
    What the fuck?
All 3 of them are over TEN THOUSAND YEARS OLD.
The war of the ancients trilogy has Shandris as a child, yes, but tyrande was already an adult by then.
    But this?
Shandris is ten fucking thousand years old!
And they animated her like this ancient ass woman, was a toddler running into mommy and daddy's arms.

Its so fucking contrived. You can tell some writer just wanted the scene, and damn everything else. "Wouldnt it be cool/sweet/awesome if…?" With no thought behind it.

  3. People are way too hard in Sylvanas, and her arc. The story of BFA-SL is actually phenomenal from a writers perspective. The problem is that from a reader persepctive, it's hard to comptehend. 99% of the playerbase are NOT writers. Her BFA-SL plot is a story by writers, for writers, period. That's why i loved it. It makes sense, it's intense, and its fulfilling. But again, you have to be writer yourself to comprehend why.

WoW has continued to work for 20 years (longer than ANY singular MMORPG EVER) because of its writing.

Now that Metzen is back, its going to be even greater. DF was boring. Nothing interesting happened, and they introduced a villain with little depth in Iridikron. Yes, he's "refreshing," but only if you enjoy basic villains with innumerable tropes. He's the "dont underestimate our enemies" villain. It's overdone, it's boring. No one can argue the stakes of DF were beyond low. Nothing intense happened. SL had Zovaal nearly REWRITE ALL FO REALITY. People screaming Iridkron is cooler than Zovaal are fucking morons. Zovaal is objectively cooler, and has objectively achieved more.

Luckily Xal'atath is the main villain of (at least) TWW, and is universally loved. That buildup of her character was done during times when people started to hate the narrative, which is hilariously ironic.

Point is, WoW is in a new high, and will continue to escalate. All you have to do is look at TWW alpha to know this (lore-wise).

  4. Honestly as someone who really started playing during Cata IMO I always enjoy the softer focus characters who are consistently present but the story doesn't really feel the need to have them be involved in everything. Lillian Voss is actually a solid example, she's been consistently present since Cata and done cool stuff and they've essentially set her and Calia up as part of the leadership for the Forsaken.

  5. I thought that you were another boring and plain ranter, but:
    – You like worgens like I do it seems. I'm generalising here, since I also like a lot of more specific aspects about entire Gilneas region too.
    – You edit the video well and have interesting topics in it.
    So yeah. Good job.

  6. I am huffing hopium that they give Tess some much needed character development. They didn't go into it, but Tess Greymane and Lilian Voss were both part of the Uncrowned during the Legion Invasion. It's why the joke of 'Need any poisons/daggers?' made me chuckle. Both know what each other's about because they've served alongside each other off and on doing roguish things and something about that; a ruler of a kingdom being a ROGUE in the purist form, tickles me. A human rogue. The type of person who solves problems through craftiness instead of heroic posturing and a sword through the head of a giant monster. I think that'll be great for the future of the Lore. Genn has too much baggage that really isn't relevant anymore. Tess has a bunch of untapped potential and a smarmy, charming personality.

Happy for the worgen players on this one. I am just PRAYING that Blizzard remembers that Tess and Lilian have been coworkers and we get a bunch of fun dialogue between them where Tess can take off her crown and Lilian can step away from the council and both can look at each other and go 'Wanna go do a rogue thing for old time's sake?'

  7. Meanwhile Horde doesn't have this problem because except for Thrall we go through leaders like tissues and we've already passed the torch many times, arguably too many times now.

  8. Its obvious to know that World of Warcraft is not linked to Warcraft to who ever understands. That, WoW started in 2004 or so. That is worse than Kalonline, but people love the game. Most of these type of games would get worse because of Mana usage being repetitive. If it hits zero.

  9. What is crazy is that not a single character had a son/daughter that was born and grew up then was included to the story.
The only character that grew up with us was Anduin.
He's literally the last of line, no wife, no heir, not a single close relative. If Warcraft had just a tidbit of politics post-classic (Defias, Prestor,…) this would have been shown as a huge issue.

I know ships are cringe, but at some point, these guys have to spread their genes 😂

  10. Problem isn't pass the torch, but how they do. Gilneas reclamation was short, boring. Lame. Shandris could give a good balance between "alliance elf" and the old feral NE had in wc3, but no. There some brake down drama, because the ppl who write this stories suffer from everything and wants their personal experiences be present in game.

  11. i played when i was 8 in wrath…safe to say

arthas turned me into a goth kid

also to note im glad he stayed dead in shadowlands they wouldve fucked his story up

  12. subbed bro. touchy topic but you approached it well. Good comments by other viewers too. Man, i think its awesome you started playing in MOP. Thats actually when i quit after playing since BC. I've always wanted to come back, to varying degrees but never had a desktop PC anymore and i couldn't bring myself to play on a MacBook lol.
I actually did just come back though..Ive not played much yet, but I'm back after 10 years. I loved the game even in the time of not playing it, i would still watch videos, listen to the music cuz the game and lore surrounding it is just so cool. I even rewatched the warcraft movie like a year ago ( i remember being somewhat let down when it did come out, didnt love it, didnt hate it) and upon rewatch i certainly appreciated it more. I've even read a few of the novels which are great!!

  13. As soon as you mentioned Sylvanas I sighed knowing I was about to get sad. Best character in WoW ruined. Personally, I still don't consider anything starting with Chronicles to be cannon. Ill be on my deathbed knowing what WoW lore really was, kinda like how nobody considers any of the new star wars media to be cannon.

  14. I feel like the early life of WoW had a clearly defined roadmap brought to it from its history and lore. Vanilla was leveling and prepping to take on the local issues of the world. TBC brought Illidan back into the picture, but also made more connections to its vast existing lore. Wotlk was end boss time, the big bad Arthas looming over us for years either literally or figuratively. It felt like after that, the story never really felt cohesive. It was the first time if you took an expansion off you felt blind sided by the direction the story took. Hopefully with thwm planning the next three expansions together it will get that solid world building again.

I love the legacy characters, but there are many heir's to their spots that make sense. They dont all need to be "killed off" but they can easily take a desk job as an advisor for the new generation

  15. I'm still waiting for them to do something more with Rexxar. MoP, BFA, no show, despite there being some key moments that he would absolutely show up to. What, was he out fishing or something?

  16. The interesting part is how many characters (and opportunities) WoW has. Thrall son (giving a proper youn orc model, please), Zekhan and Rokhan, Princess Talanji.
There is so much room for the characters introduced (I know Rokhan is from W3, but he could receive more spot) in the MMO to grow up like Varian and Anduin and so much room for new characters as well.
Characters and plots, WoW has those, but it would need to be brave and stopping using just the same characters, over and over again

  17. No, just like in Mario games, you don't let them go like Mario, Luigi or Prinses Peach. They are key characters in the world of Mario. You don't always see them, but they will come back eventually.

  18. The problem isn't that they won't let go of characters. The problem has <ALWAYS> been that they won't pick a trajectory that makes sense or that was based on earlier lore. They have always worked by Rule of Cool and don't care what the character has done in the past or how they operated.
In Varian's case, he didn't die to so they could end his story. He died solely for the 'cool' ideas they had for the Alliance and how they'd deal with not having a proper king.

  19. Blizz has come out and said that every single time they try to move on or introduce new characters or tell stories that aren't side quests to those of the main cast, players complain endlessly about. They constantly ask "Where's X/Y/Z?! They could fix this problem in an afternoon!"

  20. its important to take iconic characters with motivation and history, kill them off, and replace them with essentially the same character with no personality beyond "I am good guy" or "I am bad guy", and then move on to the next one.

  21. How about we don't do the "Passing on the torch", because in today's world, that just means torching the past.
    – You don't get respect without deserving it / proving yourself for it.
