SESAC, a major music rights group, was in a heated legal battle with YouTube (Sep 28, 2024), leading to a ton of iconic tracks being blocked in the U.S. If you’ve tried to listen to some of your favorite songs around that time and got a “Content Unavailable” message, this is why.

WHAT IS SESAC?

SESAC is a for-profit performance rights organization based in the United States. Established in 1930 as the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers, it is the second-oldest organization of its kind in the country. SESAC represents around 30,000 songwriters and boasts a catalog of over 1 million compositions.

YouTube posted “our music license agreement with the SESAC has expired without an agreement on removal conditions despite our best efforts. For this reason we have blocked content on YouTube in the US known to be associated with SESAC – as in line with copyright l as in line with copyright law.
