  2. WoW new expansion just dropped if you want to watch the war within cinematic with Anduin and Thrall talking to each other it’s next level insane if you thought this was good.

  3. The bit where he looks at the snow in his hand after wiping it off the ice is also a callback to the cutscene in Warcraft III where he crumbles a flower petal in his hand with the same motion before killing his father King Terenas

  4. "We can't do snowflakes without having it look like a pattern, so what can we do?"
"Sir, we can just individually render every flake, and give it a unique flight path."
"Are you crazy, that will take us weeks? But ok."

  5. I'm sure this was explained in comments already. but Arthas is the single most fan favorite villain in world of warcraft to date. and this came out over a decade ago. other expansion stories have failed for daring to use this lore and change/add details to their new stuff. Also his entire story from beginning to end has to be one of my favorites, because so few times does the threat to realm of Azeroth rarely actually come from one of its denizens. There's tons of great lore channels that have gone over it, (and i never like name dropping channels in others comments, feels weird, but I highly recommend learning of this characters story in general, even if you don't plan to play the game, that section of lore itself is just so good!

Also just found this channel recently and it is just so quickly climbing into favorite channel position, love the excitement, open minded attitude and in depth yet simple way of commentary, I have already learned a ton of terminology and ways of looking at the media I consume and really see the effort and art applied in more areas of production! Loving this channel!

  6. Some backstory Kai….The narrator is the father of the character in the trailer. Arthas, the guy in the trailer basically was the prince of a kingdom and the only child of the king. He was also a powerful Paladin (holy knight) . There was a plague spreading in the kingdom which turned people into zombies and he went with his mentor to investigate, only to find out a demon was spreading the plague. He went too far with his quest to defeat the demon, ignoring any and all dangers, being consumed by vengeance. He picked up the runeblade shown in the trailer which gave him an edge with which he killed the demon, but in return he sacrificed his soul, becoming evil himself, betraying his companions and killing them all off and remaining in the frozen wasteland where the trailer takes place. He picked up a helmet which gave him the power to control the dead (zombies) and he also murdered his own father too. That's why the music is so tragic, because he is a fallen hero who sacrificed everything for his people, even his people too when he fell from good. Glad this is your first WoW trailer video, because it's the high point of the game story-wise. It's a lore rich expansion with plenty of iconic characters who came to light much earlier in the story of Warcraft, some truly shaping the entire world with their actions (Arthas being one of them). It's also Blizzard's best villain by a far margin. No other villain comes even close.

  7. Check out the translation for the Lyrics of the “Arthas” and “Invincible” song during the scene. They essentially tell his whole story and even has a touch of irony in it.

  8. I really love your channel.
In a world where criticising bad films seem to be abundant, your channel is a breath of fresh air.
I may have watched this cinematic more than a hundred times, and it gives me goosebumps every time. Now I can appreciate that, for what it is, and I will watch it another hundred times. However your breakdown of why it is so good adds to my appreciation of it.
You demonstrate how, being knowledgable about a subject, makes you appreciate it so much more. And passing that passion and appreciation on to others is very generous.
    Thank you for that

  9. This cinematic will always give me chills, as someone who played WoW from the OG days. (And I have been able to defeat Arthas in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, but now I have no reason to want to play more because Cataclysm Classic is coming and that was the end of WoW for me.) So this cinematic is a reminder of the nostalgic days.

  10. fake … %99 of these dum ''filmmaker reacts'' videos are fake its not first time these ppl watch these they are poorly acting when reacting… im tired of blocking these channels but for somereason you guys enjoy this

  11. Lovely breakdown, Kai! I remember when this was revealed to the WarCraft players in November of 2007. I've seen it countless times since then, and yet I'm still learning new insights into the cinematic 16 1/2 years later. I also played WarCraft 3 when it came out in 2002, and because of that I have an emotional connection to Arthas due to playing him on his journey from Golden Prince to Lich King and all of the gut-wrenching choices he had to make. It's always amazing to me how people who haven't played the games can glean so much of the lore and history of the world and its characters from the cinematics.

You mentioned the narration, and I do want to touch on that for a minute. When Arthas' sword, Frostmourne, kills someone, it takes the soul of its victim to power the runes on the blade. This can be clearly seen in the in-game cinematis for The Wrathgate. The first soul Frostmourne ever took was Arthas', though not by a blade strike, but by Arthas wandering around with the blade for several months. It slowly leeched the soul from him, making Arthas the first victim of Frostmourne. The second life it took was King Terenas, Arthas' father.

This is why King Terenas is the narrator of the cinematic. His soul is housed in Frostmourne, and Arthas has, essentially, a telepathic connection with the blade. Terenas is speaking directly to what remains of Arthas through Frostmourne, trying to reach his son by reminding him of a conversation they had after Arthas had taken his vows to become a Paladin of The Silver Hand, serving the Holy Light. This is why Arthas slumps a little when Terenas reminds him that he was , "a weapon of righteousness."

  12. I'm absoluty intrigued by your analysis of the video. Arthas' Story is one of my all time favorites since I was a child and you managed to break it done perfectly without deeper knowledge o the lore ( I assume). Big fat Kudos to you.

  13. This was the peak of WoW and arguably the Warcraft franchise in general. I've seen this cinematic countless times over the last ~16 years and I get goosebumps every time.

  14. In case nobody else has mentioned it, the actor doing the narration is the late Earl Boen. You might recognize him from his role as Dr. Silberman from Terminator, Terminator 2, & Terminator 3, if not his other roles on film & in TV shows. He's also the one who narrated many of the cinematics for the races in the game. The last expansion that he had a voice role in is Legion.

  15. World of Warcraft may have gone downhill so fast in the past 10 years, but there is one thing nobody can possibly deny: the Blizzard artists produce some of the most beautiful cinematics we've ever seen.

  16. Would be nice to see you react to FF14's End of an Era cinematic. There's also Flames of Rebirth and A Realm Reborn, which tells different sides to the ending.

  17. While I enjoy seeing people experience this cinematic for the first time, they often lack the background that makes it so much more epic, when you know about Prince Arthas, King Terenas Menethil II (his father and the narrator of this cinematic), the kingdom of Lordaeron, the invasion of The Horde, The Scourge and the poisoned grain, the Culling of Stratholme, Lord Paladine Uther of The Knights of the Silver Hand, Lady Jaina Proudmoore…well, the whole Warcraft universe.
It hits so much deeper when you know of the dashing and somewhat cocky, slightly arrogant, but still lovable Arthas. How his slow descent into evil was laid out by Ner'zhul and used all what made Arthas a good person and a worthy hero to turn him evil. Again, the road to evil was paved by good intentions. The steep descent began when he was killing the doomed inhabitants of Stratholme, that would turn into undead monsters, but at the time of the slaughter were not aware of their fate and normal people…that he cut down, telling himself, it is for the greater good to do so. That's where he lost the trust of his beloved Jaina and his mentor Uther. After the killing, the one responsible for the disease of the citizens, the demon Mal'Ganis, lured Arthas to Northrend (where we see him now). During his quest to slay the demon lord, he gained the cursed sword Frostmourne (yes, the blade we see) and the Helm of Domination (the ones he wears). While he was able to fulfill his quest, he was turned. He returned to his fathers kingdom to kill him and destroy all of Lordaeron. In the empty shell of the throne room in the ruins of Lordaeron, you can still here (when you turn up the volume and turn down the ambient music) this speech of King Terenas and the same place his blood ran out after his beloved son shoved a blade into his heart.

The only way to experience the cinematic is to play the game. The rich history, all those small details, can only be obtained after intense study of the story. Blizz may be a really bad company, but they are amazing at creating characters, stories and putting them into cinematics.

  18. This gave me shivers when it first came out. Finally arthas awakened after all those years, warcraft was never cooler. I also suggest some of the ingame cinematics connected with this.

  19. I find it kind of amusing you talk about character growth and inspiration with a character that is an omnicidal mass murderer.

The point of the voiceover is he wasn't always this way.

  20. a really insightful desxription of your viewing as a noob. now watch it again, with your commentarey, and realise that the narration, is ironic. arthas was supposed to be the light, the righteous one. so as his father is sayiog the words, now view the film and realise,… his son..has fallen far.

  21. If you're getting goosebumps without even knowing/playing the games… After thousands of hours put within the Warcraft games, starting with Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans when I was a kid, everytime I watch these cinematics I get tears in my eyes.

And shit, they screwed Arthas and Ner'Zhul so bad in the next cinematics… 🙁
You should watch the latest "The War Within" Cinematics that's released a week ago!

  22. You really should watch the other WoW Cinematics as well.
They are the best in the industry IMHO.
Especially the latest from The War Within is so groundbreaking I even thought it was live action for the first few moments.

Great Channel and great reactions and in-depth analysis.
I also really like it that you first watch the whole thing and then analyse it.
    Keep up the great work.

  23. You should do a cursory examination of Warcraft lore to date.. don't go too deep or it will take you weeks.. and react to the most recent expansion cinematic posted last week for the first of a 3-expansion WoW arc. It's not Blizzard's best cinematic, but it has the best cinematography imo. Without basic context, you won't understand what's happening in it, however.

  24. Of course you don't know the context. But the story arc of this character might be the most shakespearean tragedy of all videogame characters. It's just so heartbreaking and powerful to watch the hero become the villian

  25. you need to react/check the custom trailers by Hurricane – there are dozen on his channel all for World of Warcraft. Blizzard even hired him for the last project – its absolute cinematic masterpiece each and every
