At this point it is almost certain that Warcraft 3 is relaunching in a really BIG way. It all started with the patch 2.0 which indicates a significant update, keep in mind Frozen throne was only 1.07, and reforged was 1.32 so by all accounts this should be really big. However Blizzard just announced Warcraft Direct on November 13th, they dropped a new category for the Warcraft RTS with the 30th anniversary logo on their website. They added new artwork with mounted Thrall and Tyrande just like they were back in the RTS as well as Warcraft 3 Jaina. They added Warcraft 3 themed crests and mounts linked to a cross promotion. Based on the previous survey we could be seeing Warcraft 4 or Warcraft 3, reforged again with new campaigns, graphics and a whole bunch of updates. Let’s dig in because there are like 15 new hints and I don’t even know where to start.

Due to images being shared across various sites it is quite difficult to find who the original artists are. 1. Instead of races. Why don't they just put Factions? Because the regular human race is composed of high elves, dwarves, gnomes, and humans. Just make it like factions and sub factions. For example Stormwind kingdoms. Then during the campaign with Muradin. It will be Ironforge and Lordaeron factions. Make it also in PVP. So it totally reforge the game. Because in many remasters of other games, there are many changes to it.

  2. I'm a warcraft 3 fan playing it even today, 20+ years later. I was playing W3 when I was 8yo, before WoW. And I swear, WoW kills the Warcraft Lore. This game today is now full of cute little pets, rainbows, and love story. Way far from the original vision we had in W3, who was serious and tragic. The Reforged graphics we had in W3 was cartoonist, inspired from WoW. It's ugly and childish. I don't want that anymore for this monumental game. I really really really hope they don't gonna mess it. But Its been 1 month now Warcraft 3 is broken for all Mac users and they don't even fix it, in ONE MONTH ! So i don't expect them to do anything extraordinary. I hope I'm wrong.

  3. They should have been releasing warcraft rts’s alongside world of Warcraft as a way to flesh out the stories of NPC’s.

Could have done in game things which change the direction of the world, cemented in a separate RTS.

Could have capture the MOBA hype, and instead of trying with HOTS, or random sc2 custom games filling the blizzard gap, actually competing with LoL and DOTA directly with a functioning and modern platform for players and modders.

It also would have given a much better basis for multimedia – books, art, and even tv/movies. These need source material and world of Warcraft just doesn’t have enough depth. The RTS did.

  4. Even if Warcraft 4 is in the production, it is going to be another Activision-Bizzard 'crap' like Reforged or requiring Imba PC game requirements like Stormgate which is also a crap.

  5. We expected that, because Blizzard advertised the game as that and on the announcement of the game had an example redone cinematic and their leadership said all of the cinematics were going to be redone like that

  6. Tells you volumes about the state of the industry if a company does not try to implement its fresh ideas in a new IP but instead opts to bet safe on brand recognition and pissing off the established core audience.

  7. Just to TLDR my other message, and to highlight the important potential misunderstanding here. The version number 2.0.0.22230 is referencial.
    2002 (WC3's release year)
22 (how many years WC3 has been out for)
30 (how many years the Warcraft franchise has been out for)
Not impossible for them to use this clearly anniversary inspired number, but that's what my other post discusses. Just need to point out what too many people are missing. This may just be ARG marketing for the anniversary.

  8. The change to the version number was one of two things in my mind, a mistake by someone unfamiliar with WC3's version numbering system, or an intentional ploy to get people's attention and get them talking and ramping excitement for something that might just be "hey, we finally got round to finishing everything we promised".

Why? Because a genuine 2.0 would be something so significant that there is no way it would be free. It would be a new product that will have a shelf price, or one of the newer more obnoxious business models. Not only that, by a WC 4 would be it's own product, not some messy bolt-on to a game that is still contentious within the community.

So why 2.0? Well, "2.0" isn't the important thing here, "2.0.0.22230" is important. 2002 (the year of release of WC3), 22 (how many years WC3 has been out for) 30 (how many years Warcraft franchise has been out for). This may not be an actual planned patch number or a goof. It's likely an attempt at ARG marketing. Its an attention grab. A "hey, look over here, this product will be involved in the anniversary" statement.

This in mind, that doesn't mean there wont be a WC4 announce, it just wont be something that affects WC3:R, it'll be its own thing if it happens. Reforge itself may well get an update as well, most likely the new VO and cinematics that were promised originally, and hopefully completely new models that are made in-house this time instead of being outsourced to some unimpassioned third party developer. Not much of a selling point, I agree, but ideas like new campaigns based around WoW lore, alternative post WC3 reality telling a different story from WoW are just too wishful in my eyes, and far too much work for a divisive remaster.

That said, using the WC3:R product to tell the entirety of the EXISTING Warcraft RTS story, starting with either the Orc or Human campaign from WC1, is something I can see happening, and I can see that triggering a version flip and us getting it for free during the anniversary, but future campaigns from the rest of WC1 and WC2 will absolutely be charged for if the free campaign garners enough positivity.

Thing is, even if 'Warcraft 3: Reforged' does become 'Warcraft Trilogy' and it ends up containing everything from Orcs and Humans through to The Frozen Throne, the existing art style and the messy handling of the "improved storytelling" need to be fixed first. Reforge just carries such a negative pavlovian response in players that some distancing is required.

  9. They probably aren't going to be able to walk back all of the changes that REALLY pissed everyone off, like laying waste to all the custom maps, but this is their chance to at least try to progress the RTS game. Who knows, maybe they'll actually give us graphical updates and cutscenes that don't look like D-grade student projects.
