Game Information:
World of Warcraft (WoW) is a landmark MMORPG, released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment, that has redefined online gaming. Set in the immersive Warcraft universe, WoW takes players into the world of Azeroth, following the events of *Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne*. Announced in 2001 and launched on November 23, 2004, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise, the game has since seen eight major expansions: *The Burning Crusade* (2007), *Wrath of the Lich King* (2008), *Cataclysm* (2010), *Mists of Pandaria* (2012), *Warlords of Draenor* (2014), *Legion* (2016), *Battle for Azeroth* (2018), *Shadowlands* (2020), *DragonFlight* (2022) and *The War Within* (2024).
Like other MMORPGs, WoW allows players to create a character and explore an open-world environment from a first- or third-person perspective. Players can venture across vast landscapes, battle various creatures, complete quests, and interact with NPCs and other players. The game emphasizes character progression, with players earning experience points to level up, acquire better equipment, and engage in player-versus-player (PvP) combat or cooperative quests. Although teamwork is encouraged, the game can be enjoyed solo as well.
World of Warcraft achieved massive critical and commercial success upon release, quickly becoming the most popular MMORPG of all time. At its peak in 2010, it had 12 million subscribers, and by 2014, the game had over 100 million registered accounts. By 2017, WoW had generated over $9.23 billion in revenue, cementing its place as one of the highest-grossing video game franchises ever. Lauded by critics as one of the greatest MMORPGs and video games of all time, WoW continues to thrive with ongoing developer support and expansions more than 15 years after its launch. In 2019, Blizzard released *World of Warcraft Classic*, a version that lets players experience the original game before any expansions were added.
